Yuzhu–Pazhou Travel Time to Be Cut to About 5 Minutes as Transport Projects Make New Progress

In terms of improving the city’s cross-river corridor network, the Yuzhu Tunnel, Guangzhou’s longest immersed tube tunnel that passes under the Pearl River twice, has a total length of 2.6 kilometers. The tunnel starts from Xingang East Road in Haizhu District in the south, crosses beneath the Pearl River through an immersed tube tunnel, runs under Huangpu Avenue to the north, and ends south of the main channel of Shenyong Stream.

As a key node in Guangzhou’s “Eastward Expansion and Southward Development” strategy, the project will connect Haizhu, Huangpu and Tianhe districts upon completion. It will serve as an important traffic link between major planned areas on both sides of the Pearl River, including Guangzhou International Financial City, the Lingang Business District and Pazhou, facilitating integrated development across the river.

A project representative from the Yuzhu Tunnel of the Guangzhou Municipal Project Management Center said that once the tunnel opens to traffic, vehicles will be able to travel directly from Haizhu District to Huangpu District via the tunnel, significantly reducing commuting time from the current 15 minutes to about 5 minutes.

Currently, the project has achieved 48 percent of its planned physical progress. The main structure of the Beidisha Island section of the Yuzhu Tunnel has been completed, while the floating transportation and installation of the first batch of immersed tube segments and the prefabrication of the second batch of tunnel segments have been completed. The relocation and reconstruction of utility pipelines for the AC ramp on the Huangpu Avenue section and the Xingang East Road section are progressing in an orderly manner, ensuring the tunnel’s completion and opening to traffic in 2028.
