GDD celebrates 40th anniversary

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the first batch of national economic and technological development districts.

As one of the first national-level development zones, Guangzhou Development District (GDD) has explored areas such as legal construction, management systems, and the market environment over the past 40 years, playing a leading role in the development of the Guangzhou economy.

GDD is currently home to over 5,000 foreign-funded enterprises. Actual foreign investment utilization exceeded $3 billion for the first time in 2023, accounting for 44.4 percent of total foreign investment in Guangzhou, ranking first among national-level development districts for the fifth year in a row.

The newly revised "Regulations of the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development District" aim to break development bottlenecks, consolidate reform achievements, and promote the comprehensive deepening of reforms.

From an initial regional GDP of 574 million yuan ($79.21 million) to 376.206 billion yuan in 2023, the GDD has maintained an average annual growth rate of 8 percent in GDP, with its industrial output value reaching nearly 900 billion yuan. Among 229 economic and technological development districts nationwide, it consistently ranks second in comprehensive rankings.

GDD is also committed to promoting high-quality development. In recent years, through measures such as promoting intellectual property protection and facilitating the development of the digital economy, it has attracted more technological innovation projects.

In addition, it established a strategic scientific and technological innovation platform cluster led by the Guangzhou Laboratory and the National Technology Innovation Center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, gathering over 1,000 scientific research institutions to support researchers and entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, GDD collaborates on intellectual property rights with Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, providing support for regional technological innovation.
