Huangpu launches ancient canal connection project

Updated : 2023-02-03

As one of the starting points of China's ancient Maritime Silk Road, the ancient Fuxu Canal was constructed during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). In June 1994, the site was listed as a protected cultural relic in Guangzhou's Huangpu district.

The canal connection project recently started construction in Suidong Street, Huangpu district.

The project's initial total investment is about 139 million yuan ($20.6 million) and is expected to be completed in early 2024.

In order to reproduce the style of Lingnan water town, the project will renovate and expand the Nanwan Chong sluice and Miaotou Chong No 2 sluice.

Once completed, there will be docks where dragon boats can be moored, and ports to build future water excursion routes.

The project will also build new "pocket parks" where local residents to relax.
