Huangpu scores highly in education and housing

Updated : 2022-12-01

The "Research on Population and Housing Status of the Research Report of the Seventh Population Census of Huangpu District" was recently released to the public.

According to the report, the total permanent population of Huangpu increased from 831,600 in 2010 to 1,264,000 in December 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 4.3 percent.

Amid the transition to a greying population, the children's coefficient, senile coefficient, aging index, and median age were 15.4, 5.6, 36, and 32.9 years, respectively. The increase in the size of the total population and relatively healthy age demographic have laid a good foundation for the economic and social development of Huangpu.

Huangpu is also seeing a clear trend of shrinking households. The average household in the district now has 2.25 people, down from 2.5 when the sixth national population census was taken in 2010.

The report pointed out that due to the historical industrial structure of Huangpu, which is dominated by secondary industries such as manufacturing, the gender ratio in the district skews in favor of men for most age groups. The proportion of unmarried people is also high, standing at 30.8 percent in the district, and nine of the district's 17 towns have an unmarried proportion of more than 30 percent.

The education level of the general population has also improved. According to the report, permanent residents aged 15 and above are seeing their average number of years in education increase from 10.75 to 11.92 years. Meanwhile, people living in 15 of the 17 towns in Huangpu have 11 years of education on average. This has provided stronger human resources for the industrial development of Huangpu.
