Source: GZFAO | Updated : 2022-09-28

The information office of the Guangzhou municipal people's government held a press conference on COVID-19 control and prevention in Guangzhou on Sept 27. Zhang Yi, deputy director and spokesperson of the Guangzhou Health Commission, offered the latest COVID-19 updates in Guangzhou.

2 New Locally-acquired Cases Are Travelers from Outside Guangzhou

Guangzhou reported two locally-acquired COVID-19 cases from 8:00 Sept 26 to 8:00 Sept 27. Both were travelers from outside Guangzhou.

The patients are both men who live in Shijing sub-district, Baiyun district. They were detected in the PCR testing conducted for people with exposure risk. Both patients were transferred to Guangzhou No 8 People's Hospital. The first patient was diagnosed as a mild COVID-19 case and the second patient was an asymptomatic case. Their conditions are stable.

According to the epidemiological investigation and virus genome sequencing results, the two patients both contracted the virus outside Guangzhou. They had contact with the public before being quarantined. Therefore, the risk of further spread remains.

Residents Are Advised to Stay in the City During National Day Holiday

Many Chinese cities have reported COVID-19 outbreaks in recent weeks. As an important port city and a gateway of opening-up, Guangzhou is constantly faced with the pressure of containing imported cases while preventing a local resurgence. As the National Day holiday approaches, more people are set to depart from and arrive in Guangzhou. The risk of imported cases continues to rise and the COVID-19 containment situation remains challenging.

First of all, large-scale group activities should be avoided. Before and after the National Day holiday, large-scale group activities should not be held in principle. Most activities should take place online. For necessary physical events, a COVID-19 response plan must be developed and the number of participants should be kept at a minimum. Precautionary measures must be strictly implemented. Attendees must scan the venue code and provide a PCR test result taken from within the past 48 hours of the event.

Second, residents are advised to spend the holiday in Guangdong. We encourage residents to travel in the surrounding suburbs or enjoy a staycation inside the city during the National Day holiday. Residents are encouraged to stay in the city and refrain from cross-provincial travel if possible. Residents should avoid trips to prefectures (cities, districts) with medium- or high-risk areas, and avoid unessential travel to municipalities with medium- or high-risk areas. People who have been to prefectures (cities, districts) with medium- or high-risk areas are subject to certain travel restrictions – two negative PCR test reports taken within the past 48 hours (the two tests must be taken 24 hours apart) and a green health code are required for essential travel. Residents who have travelled to another city in Guangdong province must undergo two PCR tests within three days upon returning to Guangzhou. A green health code and a negative PCR test result taken within the past 72 hours must be presented upon entering inns, hotels, and tourist attractions. Residents who must travel to another province should hold a negative PCR test result taken within the past 48 hours before boarding flights, high-speed trains, trains, inter-provincial coaches, and inter-provincial boats.

Third, stay alert at all times. The current dominant Omicron strain is highly transmissive and insidious. To protect yourself and your family members, we ask residents to keep exercising precautions and actively participate in regular community PCR testing. It is worth noting that if you have received requests from the CDC of Guangzhou or your hometown (or places you have temporarily visited) for the purpose of epidemiological investigation information, you need to report to your community immediately and undergo health management measures, such as taking PCR tests according to the instructions of the community staff. This rule applies to everyone, including those have stayed in Guangzhou and those who travelled or returned to Guangzhou from another city.
