The Huangpu district urban management and comprehensive law enforcement bureau signed a cooperation agreement with WeRide, a Huangpu-based enterprise, on an autonomous new energy sanitation vehicles project on Guangzhou International Bio Island on Sept 1.

This is also the first fully unmanned sanitation vehicles operation project to use open roads in China.

Based on the driverless sanitation vehicles produced by WeRide, it can realize green, safe, efficient, and intelligent sanitation work.

This kind of sanitation vehicle has multiple functions, such as cleaning, dry sweeping, post-spraying, and hedging. It can complete public road sanitation tasks like road cleaning, watering, and dust reduction, as well as spraying and disinfecting. After the operation, it can significantly improve the efficiency of sanitation work and eliminate the hidden safety hazards of traditional manual sanitation operations.

In addition, WeRide has built a remote control center for the vehicle fleet to further improve the operation efficiency of unmanned sanitation vehicles. It can now realize remote control, real-time scheduling, line management, status monitoring, and other functions to ensure the safe operation of the vehicle.

The total area of Guangzhou International Bio Island is about 1.9 square kilometers, covering different road types including roadways, sidewalks, greenways, squares, as well as tunnels. The total length of roads in the area is about 33 km.

The tunnel section entering and exiting the island, which has low visibility, sets a great challenge to the traditional daily sanitation. The operation of WeRide's fully driverless sanitation vehicle can overcome this difficulty.

Previously, the fully driverless sanitation vehicle had undergone a three-month public road test. Compared with the traditional sanitation operation mode, the use of these vehicles reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 26,791 kilograms and saved an average of 57 percent in manpower.

At present, WeRide's fully unmanned sanitation fleet has been put into operation, carrying out daily sanitation work on Guangzhou International Bio Island by, providing autonomous driving sanitation operations seven days a week, covering a total cleaning area of about 389,000 sq m, which satisfies the standard requirement of urban sanitation operations.
