Barriers are erected by the intelligent vehicle-intercepting system to prevent vehicles from entering the flooded tunnel.

Nineteen tunnels in Guangzhou's Huangpu district have installed an intelligent vehicle-intercepting system, which can prevent vehicles from entering flooded tunnels automatically, local media outlets reported on July 14.

The system allows drivers to no longer need to worry about straying into flooded tunnels anymore, enabling staff of the municipal facility management center to deal with related problems in the shortest amount of time.

Being equipped with new generation technologies like artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and edge computing, the system is capable of monitoring the real-time water level and traffic conditions of the flooded areas all day round.

When the water level in the tunnel reaches 15 centimeters, the system automatically issues a yellow alert, while the warning indicator at the tunnel entrance will light up to remind drivers to pay attention to the water level in the tunnel and drive slowly. Staff of the municipal facility management center will receive the alert sent by the system immediately as well.

When the water level in the tunnel reaches 27 cm, the system will issue a red alert and prevent vehicles from entering the tunnel by erecting barriers.

To date, the system has issued 27 yellow alerts and 14 red alerts.
