Zengcheng-Tianhe Expressway has won the approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources for land use on July 8 and has started construction.

The 38.4-kilometer expressway is part of the Zengcheng-Foshan Expressway and construction costs amount to 16 billion yuan ($2 billion).

The east-west expressway passes through Guangzhou's four districts of Zengcheng, Huangpu, Tianhe and Baiyun. After opening, it is expected to effectively relieve the east-west traffic congestion in Guangzhou.

The expressway is also expected to help optimize the regional expressway network in the Pearl River Delta by strengthening the connections between Guangzhou and other cities, such as Heyuan and Foshan.

In addition, it is expected to help Guangzhou build an international comprehensive transportation hub at a high level and accelerate the construction of the "one-hour" transportation circle in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
