Guangzhou Development District was designated a provincial demonstrative zone for the promotion and innovation of imported trade by the Department of Commerce of Guangdong Province, local media outlets reported on May 17.

The award is expected to promote the integration of various elements and procedures regarding industries, consumption, and transportation in GDD, as well as establish a wider and stronger industry and supply chain.

GDD's average annual GDP growth in the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20) was higher than the municipal, provincial, and national growth rates. In addition, GDD ranked first in five major economic indexes among all economic development districts in China.

It has achieved eye-catching performances in import and export trade, with its total import and export volume exceeding 300 billion yuan ($44 billion) in 2021, accounting for 30 percent of Guangzhou's total. Imported products of GDD are mainly mechanical and electrical products, as well as high-tech ones.

Currently, GDD's total industrial output is over 800 billion yuan, and a modern industrial system has been formulated in the district, featuring the automobile, electronics, energy, and chemicals industries. GDD is also home to over 1,000 industrial enterprises above designated size, with a total industrial output value above designated size of over 800 billion yuan in 2021.

The import and export volume handled by Huangpu Comprehensive Bonded Zone increased by over 50 percent in 2021, with the figure expanding by 74.8 percent to 4.74 billion yuan in the first quarter of 2022.
