Huangpu injects vitality into protection, promotion of relics

Updated : 2022-04-08

Guangzhou's Huangpu district has been devoting continuous efforts to renovating and promoting local ancient cultural and historical relics, such as villages, trees, houses, temples, towers, and wells, local media outlets reported on April 7.

The district has utilized storytelling, painting, and stage shows to make the local culture more vivid and attractive to local residents. In addition, opinions from experts, scholars, and local villagers have been solicited to support urban renovation, construction, as well as environment management.

Huangpu is home to 5,208 registered ancient and rare trees, accounting for 53 percent of Guangzhou's total, of which 3,096 are scattered around houses in villages. However, problems have occurred in the protection and transplanting of these trees when renovating nearby houses.

A document released by the district in December 2021 put forward that informatization, digitization, and intelligent management of ancient and rare trees' whole life cycle shall be carried out.

Advanced 3D geographic information system technology will be applied to include all ancient and rare trees in Huangpu to form an electronic map. Other high-tech equipment, such as cameras and vibration displacement transducers, have been installed to carry out real time monitoring on these trees' nearby living environment.

A QR code is hung on each tree, allowing people to scan the code and learn more about the tree's history.

Liantang village has been focusing on the optimized renovation and management of its ancient relics, injecting new vitality to their development. Cafes, tea houses, restaurants, and libraries have been opened in ancient houses, attracting more young people to get a closer look at traditional culture and history.
