Yangcheng Evening Post: High-tech zones discussed at seminar

A seminar was held in Guangzhou's Huangpu district on Dec 16 to discuss the development strategies of national high-tech industrial development zones.

More than 3,000 representatives from nearly 80 national high-tech industrial development zones and scientific research institutes attended the seminar.

The seminar was intended to showcase the rapid development of the Guangzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, which will lead the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in innovation capabilities, industrial influence and talent.

The Guangzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone recorded a GDP of 366.3 billion yuan ($57.51 billion) in 2020 and is home to more than 20,000 small and medium-sized science and technology enterprises and over 2,000 high-tech enterprises.

It is accelerating the integration of innovation, industrial and talent chains to increase local original innovation capabilities, according to Liu Shi, deputy director of the Guangzhou Development District Administrative Committee. 

There are now 169 national high-tech industrial development zones across the country, which are emerging as hubs of innovation with high-level talents and top industries.

The GDP of the 169 national high-tech industrial development zones exceeded 12.2 trillion yuan in 2019, accounting for 12.3 percent of China's total. Their tax contributions reached 1.9 trillion yuan, accounting for 11.8 percent of China's total, according to Li Xiaoying, associate professor of the Institute of Sun Yat-sen University's Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Development Studies.
