Huangpu receives Hometown of Folk Culture and Art title

Updated : 2021-09-06

Guangzhou's Huangpu district was selected as a Hometown of Folk Culture and Art in Guangdong Province for its national intangible cultural heritage, the Birth of Boluo (God of the Sea).

The selection was recently conducted by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province based on local recommendations.

The Birth of Boluo is a traditional event that has been celebrated since the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and boasts a history of more than 1,000 years. It lasts from the 11th day to the 13th day of the second month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

People from miles around flock to the Nanhai God Temple praying for blessings during the period, and traders also take the opportunity to sell handicrafts and daily necessities, hence the origin of the temple fair.

Having been held 15 times, the temple fair is the oldest and largest of its kind in Lingnan area. It has promoted cultural integration with the participation of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao performance teams, and attracts domestic and overseas visitors.
