A 10th anniversary of the Guangzhou International Bio Island press conference was held on Aug 11 to highlight the island's progress over the past decade.

Located in Guangzhou's Huangpu district, and formerly known as Guanzhou Island, Guangzhou International Bio Island was officially opened in 2011. Since the Guanzhou International Biological Forum, dubbed as the "Davos Forum of the Bio-Industry", was held on the island for the first time in 2017, the conference has cemented the island as the permanent host for the annual forum.

The island now has gathered more than 500 biomedical companies and nearly 40 research institutes including seven of the world's top 500 projects, five listed company headquarters, and 36 clinical drug institutions. In the first half of 2021, a total of 42 new projects have settled here, and the introduction of foreign capital has reached $60 million.

Leading companies such as AstraZeneca, Danaher, Merck, Hengrui, and BeiGene have gathered here. In May 2021, the Guangzhou laboratory led by academician Zhong Nanshan was inaugurated on the island. Moreover, the island has built international cooperation platforms such as the Guangzhou Sino-Israel Bio Industry Incubation Center and the UK-China Science Bridge.

Huangpu district companies actively shadow high-level players in the international biomedicine industry, focus on innovation as their primary driving force for development, and strive to establish the island as a national biomedicine policy innovation experimental zone and the world's top biomedicine and biosafety research and development center, He Lulu, deputy head of the Huangpu district, said at the press conference.
