Huangpu on track to become 'District of Libraries'

Updated : 2021-07-23

Guangzhou's Huangpu district, which seeks to become the "District of Libraries", is home to more than 500 libraries and reading spaces. On average, there is a public library available to every 7,000 local residents.

As of now, Huangpu has built more than 80 intelligent rest stations for reading at bus stops, and the number will increase to 115 by the end of August. The electronic screens at the rest stations are installed with digital reading systems. People have access to a bulk of electronic books, newspapers, periodicals, videos and exhibitions from Huangpu Library's online service terminal. The fragmentary waiting time can be fully utilized for reading or learning about local culture.

When their buses arrive, the readers can scan the QR code on the screens to access these resources from Huangpu Library Digital Cultural Study Center's mini program.

To promote reading within campuses, the resources of local public libraries and 104 school libraries have also been integrated for overall management and distribution. Students can borrow and return paperback books at any of the public and school libraries.

In addition, the Huangpu culture, radio, television and tourism bureau has selected 10 demonstrative school libraries to be equipped with self-service machines this year so that students can borrow and return books with a palm scan.
