Huangpu to pilot mixed driving environment

Updated : 2021-07-15

Guangzhou's Huangpu district will become a pilot area for autonomous driving vehicles to drive alongside human-driven vehicles.

Policies and work plans for the pilot program of mixed driving environments were released by Guangzhou on July 14.

The city will support passenger and cargo transportation by taxies, ride-hailing services, buses and trucks in the preliminary stage, and services like express delivery, postal service and urban sanitation will be explored later based on technological development.

By 2025, a large-scale, multi-dimensional and comprehensive trial will be carried out over five stages, which vary on the type of vehicles, proportion of autonomous driving vehicles, and the degree of vehicle-road synergy.

The pilot can only move on to the next stages if a large proportion of autonomous driving vehicles have no safety accidents for 180 days, and if it passes the evaluations from municipal groups.

Huangpu government will evaluate the local pilot area for the mixed driving program by itself. The district boasts a solid industrial foundation for the pilot program as it has a number of autonomous driving projects with core technologies and a wide-reaching influence from well-known autonomous driving companies, such as Baidu Apollo, WeRide, and Xpeng.
