Two bridges to connect Hongshengsha and Changzhou islands

Updated : 2021-06-25

Two bridges are set to be built between Hongshengsha and Changzhou islands, at a cost of 703.6 million yuan ($109 million).

The bridge on the north side will be 510 meters long and 27 meters wide, while the one on the south side will feature a length of 520 meters and a width of 24 meters.

Located in the Pearl River estuary, Hongshengsha Island lies near Changzhou Island in the west and Dajisha Island in the east. It forms part of Guangzhou's Second Central Business District.

Currently, there are no roads and bridges connecting the island with surrounding areas, and ferry is the only means of transport.

However, this situation is set to change. In addition to the proposed ornamental bridges, the second phase of Guangzhou Metro Line 7, currently under construction, will see the creation of a station on the island.

Hongshengsha Island used to serve as a wharf of Guangzhou Port for the loading and unloading of coal. An island preservation plan, approved by Guangzhou in 2015, forbids real estate development on Dahao, Emeisha, Hongshengsha, Dajisha and Changzhou islands.

Hongshengsha will be transformed into a world-class travel destination with high-quality yachts plus artistic, cultural and tourism facilities.
