Lychee harvest season begins in Huangpu

Updated : 2021-06-24

Guangzhou's Huangpu district is experiencing a bumper lychee harvest, with an estimated output of about 7,000 metric tons. As of now, 5,400 tons of lychees have ripened and hit the market, of which 3,500 tons have been sold.

The ancient lychee tree at Yuyan Academy has also borne more fruit than in previous years. The oldest of its kind in Guangzhou, the tree is more than 1,000 years old. Even during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the tree was so large that it required two people stretched arm-to-arm to fully encircle it.

A Huangpu Cultural Festival was recently held in the district to celebrate the bumper harvest as well as the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. Lychee gift boxes were sent to 100 academicians and other high-caliber talented individuals in return for their prominent contributions to local development.

Huangpu has a more-than-1,000-year-long history of planting lychees, and there is a saying that goes "The best lychees in the world are in Guangdong, and the most precious species are in Luogang".

The district is now home to more than 20,000 mu (1,333 hectares) of lychee plantation area, of which 1,000 mu consist of ancient trees aged above 100 years.
