Huangpu pilots use of UAV in sample delivery

Updated : 2021-06-02

A multiple-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle loaded with biological samples took off from Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital on May 31, heading to the headquarters laboratory of Guangzhou KingMed Diagnostics Group on Guangzhou International Bio Island at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

This marked the first UAV route launched in Guangdong province for sample delivery. The entire process took just 10 minutes, which is 20 minutes shorter than motor transport, which may be subject to traffic jams during peak hours.

A cold chain logistics system with broad coverage and fast delivery is critical to the quality of biological samples and test results. UAVs, which can work 24/7 and boast a rapid speed, are now being used for the commercial transportation of blood and nucleic acid samples.

On average, KingMed Diagnostics' labs across the country transport more than 250,000 samples for tests daily. The enterprise now operates nearly 100 UAV routes in Guangzhou and Hangzhou to provide door-to-door delivery services, which will gradually be extended to more of its labs and form a stereo cold-chain logistics network, according to Xie Jiangtao, vice president of KingMed Diagnostics.
