Huangpu to launch vaccination for elderly aged over 60

Updated : 2021-05-20

Starting in July, Guangzhou's Huangpu district will offer free COVID-19 vaccination service to people over 60.

As of May 18, Huangpu had administered COVID-19 vaccines to 505,277 people, more than half of its population.

A mobile team of 99 medical staff has been providing door-to-door service to large enterprises, industrial parks and institutions of higher education that have more than 5,000 people wanting to be vaccinated.

Now that the vaccination rate has exceeded 50 percent, Huangpu will lower the threshold to enterprises with more than 1,000 people wanting to be vaccinated.

In addition, Yunpu sub-district has arranged four coaches to offer free shuttle services, while Jiufo sub-district has rented chartered buses to pick up employees from construction sites and industrial parks during noon breaks.

Zhong Nanshan, a leading expert in China's respiratory disease research, was recently inoculated with domestically-made COVID-19 vaccine in Guangzhou. He noted that vaccination is a very good way to achieve herd immunity.

Zhong added that the vaccination rate in China is relatively low. It must keep up with other countries in the world, and strive to reach 70 percent to 80 percent as soon as possible.
