Guangzhou Maritime Museum, which will focus on maintaining collections as well as research work, will open to the public next month.

Located in the south of Miaotou community in Huangpu district, the museum covers an area of 35,700 square meters and boasts four floors. It is set to feature cultural relics and historical materials related to the development of the Maritime Silk Road as well as Guangzhou's foreign trade over the past 2,000 years.

The museum's large exhibition space means that ceramics, silk, tea, medicine, shipbuilding tools and navigation instruments can all be displayed. There will also be large-scale models of historical ships, which have been created to show scenes of ancient trading.

Since the Qin (221BC-207BC) and Han (206BC-220) dynasties, Guangzhou has been recognized as one of the important birthplaces of the Maritime Silk Road, and has always served as the main port for foreign trade, as well as being a major transportation hub on the South China Sea.

The museum is an important project for Guangzhou to implement the Belt and Road Initiative and build the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. Authorities in both the city of Guangzhou and Huangpu district attach great importance to the construction of Guangzhou Maritime Museum, and plan to make it a new cultural landmark for the city.
