Updated : 2021-01-21

With a total investment of 3 billion yuan ($464 million), the first phase of Tram Line 5 in Guangzhou's Huangpu district will begin construction in late May and enter trial operations by 2024.

The 14.41-kilometer section, which features five stops, will start from Zhenlong West Metro Station and end at Yuyan Road Station. It will connect with both Metro Line 21 and Tram Line 2.

Eleven tramcars will run on this route with a maximum speed of 70 km per hour, according to its environmental impact assessment report, which has been released on the website of the Guangzhou ecological and environment bureau.

Upon operation, the new tram line route will facilitate travel between China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City and Guangzhou Science City, as well as the Yonghe, Changling and Yupu clusters.

Currently, construction work on Tram Line 2 is well underway, while Tram Line 1 was put into operation on Dec 28, 2020.
