Two landmark gates become calling cards of Huangpu

Updated : 2020-12-09

The Southern and Northern gates of China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City (CSGKC) have emerged as new calling cards of Guangzhou's Huangpu district after five months of construction.

The Southern Gate is located at Guangxin Avenue and the Huangdeng village section of the Guangzhou-Shantou Expressway, while the Northern Gate is situated on Kaifang Avenue, 200 meters away from the border of Huangpu and Baiyun districts.

Each of the two gates is comprised of a steel-made archway, five artistic statues named Wisdom Trees, with a height varying from 13.5 to 23.6 meters, as well as associated decorations, lighting, and landscaping.

The Möbius strip logo above the archways conveys the unlimited possibility of CSGKC. Inspired by the famous saying of "Knowledge is power," the design of the archways features twisted lines to highlight the sense of power. The blue of the archway symbolizes the Maritime Silk Road and the culture of the Huang Port.

The five Wisdom Trees integrate the shape of the renowned solar-powered "Supertrees" in Singapore and Canton Tower in Guangzhou. The upward gesture of the trees implies that the cooperation between China and Singapore in CSGKC has vast potential for further development.

In overhead views, the five Wisdom Trees are like five rings that stand for five continents that have connections with each other through the archways, a metaphor for globalization and building "a community with a shared future."

To demonstrate the beauty of math, the Northern Gate adopts the Golden Ratio, and the Southern Gate's inner line adopts the Brachistochrone Curve.
