White paper highlights Huangpu industrial advantages

A Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Innovation Ecosystem White Paper was released by global science and technology behemoth Merck Group during the 3rd China International Import Expo on Nov 6.

The paper was compiled by Merck China Innovation Hub and Strategy after visits to more than 100 professionals from Greater Bay Area enterprises, government and research institutes. It decodes the solid industrial foundation, obvious aggregation effect and strong innovation capability of Guangzhou’s Huangpu district in the healthcare, semiconductor and display industries.

According to the white paper, the Greater Bay Area is a major driving force in China's pharmaceutical industry which boasts advantageous industrial agglomeration and a complete industrial chain. Especially, its in vitro diagnosis sector has played a significant role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Huangpu-based Da An Gene developed the nucleic acid detection kit within 48 hours after acquiring the gene sequence on Jan 12. The product received national approval on Jan 28 and has been recommended by the official website of the World Health Organization.

In addition, the Greater Bay Area also enjoys distinctive advantages in semiconductor design and analog chip manufacturing, which sustain a strong growth momentum. The semiconductor project of CanSemi Technology, for instance, entered mass production in Huangpu's China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City in 2019, and is expected to have a monthly output of 40,000 units by 2022.

A core area of China's display industry, the Greater Bay Area has attracted hordes of leading enterprises. LG Display, the world's largest panel maker, invested 46 billion yuan ($7 billion) in the 8.5 generation organic light-emitting diode production lines in Guangzhou, which came into operation in August 2019.
