Updated : 2020-10-22

The engineering procurement construction project for the first phase of the Nanotechnology Biosafety Center and National Nanotechnology Innovation Research Institute of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has recently completed the bidding phase.

With a total investment of 4 billion yuan ($599 million), the Nano Biosafety Center and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area National Nanotechnology Innovation Research Institute will occupy 84,000 square meters and feature a floor area of 460,000 sq m.

The first phase of the project has an investment of 1.06 billion yuan, and is located south of Guangyuan Express Road and north of Hulin Road in the Yuzhu area of Huangpu district. It will encompass a Nanotechnology Biosafety Center, a Nanotechnology Exhibition Platform, a Micro-Nano Atomic Manufacturing Center, and laboratories.

The first of its kind in the world, the Nanotechnology Biosafety Center will be operated by the research team of the Laboratory for Biomedical Effects of Nanomaterials and Nanosafety of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhao Yuliang, president of the National Nanotechnology Innovation Research Institute of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, noted that the facility will not focus on fundamental research. It will be devoted to the transformation of research achievements across the world into technologies and products.

China's fundamental research in nanotechnology has been at the forefront of the world, with 210,000 patents obtained. However, the transformation rate is less than 1 percent. Huangpu is expected to become the world's leading source of innovation in core nanotechnologies by transforming China's huge fundamental research results into a national economic strength, bolstering national scientific and technological innovation ability.
