Huangpu plans three tunnels across Pearl River

Updated : 2020-07-24

Guangzhou's Huangpu district has been planning to build three tunnels crossing the Pearl River to better cope with transportation inconveniences caused by the river.

The Yuzhu-Pazhou tunnel is designed to be a two-way six-lane tunnel with a designed speed of 50 kilometers per hour. Costing about 4.74 billion yuan ($676.22 million), the tunnel stretches about 3.5 km.

It is expected that the travel time between eastern Pazhou and Yuzhu will be shortened to five minutes from the current 20 minutes by car.

The Shayuzhou tunnel, which will span 5.07 km in length, is scheduled to be a two-way six-lane tunnel with a designed speed of 60 km/h. The total investment of the tunnel will amount to 5.06 billion yuan.

The tunnel, connecting Huangpu and Panyu districts, will also connect several major development platforms in Guangzhou, such as Yuzhu, Guangzhou International Innovation City, and Nansha district. It is expected to serve as a transportation artery supporting the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the tech innovation corridor linking Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao.

The third tunnel, connecting the west area of Huangpu and Hualong town in Panyu district, is about 3.73 km in length, with an overall investment of around 4.67 billion yuan.
