Huangpu raises $2m for poverty alleviation efforts

Updated : 2020-07-02

Guangzhou's Huangpu district launched a donation activity on July 2 to mark the Guangdong Poverty Alleviation Day.

The annual campaign aims to address the imbalanced development between urban and rural areas. In total, Huangpu raised more than 15 million yuan ($2 million) in donations from the public and nearly 60 local enterprises.

Since 2016, Huangpu has been committed to helping lift Qingyuan's Yangshan county, as well as Duyun, Dushan county, and Sandu Shui autonomous county in Guizhou province out of poverty. For example, it has offered training classes to cultivate teachers and technicians in Sandu Shui autonomous county.

Chen Xingna, a representative of Sandu Shui autonomous county, spoke highly of Huangpu's contributions to aiding the county overcome poverty in 2019, one year in advance of the previous target at the donation activity.

Mobilizing social forces to participate in poverty alleviation is one of the important measures among Huangpu's efforts. As an economic powerhouse, the district has been active in setting up a platform to match local enterprises with poverty alleviation projects.
