GDD leads in fighting COVID-19 epidemic through technological innovation

A total of 172 companies and scientific research institutes in Guangzhou Development District (GDD) have played an important role in the fight against the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has named COVID-19.

Efforts have been made in five major areas, spanning clinical treatment and drugs, vaccine research and development, detection technology and products, virus etiology and epidemiology, as well as animal model construction.

"GDD has taken the lead in China in the research and development of testing kits and medicine," said Zhao Yuliang, director at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Guangzhou Double Bioproducts Co Ltd has developed a vaccine for the novel coronavirus applying the technology of subunit vaccines.

Currently, the vaccine has entered the fast approval channel of the National Medicine Products Administration and the statistics from the latest comprehensive test of the vaccine have been in line with expectations.

"GDD has established a batch of high-level laboratories, making it possible to gather research groups as soon as possible. The solid industrial foundation in biopharmaceuticals has also contributed to the fight," added Zhao.

The Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory (GRMH-GDL) has teamed with the Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as the Sun Yat-sen Medical Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, setting up nine emergency projects spanning three areas, namely rapid diagnosis, drug development, and vaccines.

"The experience of using technological innovation as the main force to fight against the epidemic is worthy of being promoted to the whole country," added Zhao.
