Construction for Longping International Modern Agricultural Park in Guangzhou's Huangpu district kicked off on Feb 26, as well as the planting of rice paddies at the first phase of the park.

The overall plan of Longping park was made by Yuan Longping, who is known as the "father of hybrid rice." The site of the park was also chosen by Yuan.

Covering a total area of 6,662 mu (444.13 hectares), the park is designed to be a modern agricultural park integrating agriculture, scientific research, and sightseeing.

It is expected to be an important base for agricultural training, academic communication, and public promotion in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, allowing urban residents living in the Pearl River Delta region to get a close look at nature.

The first phase of the park is located at Dajisha Island and Baitusha Island. The rice paddy park on Dajisha Island will finish the planting of 1,340 mu (89.33 hectares) of high-quality rice paddies this year, including a pilot field spanning 30 mu for the third-generation hybrid rice that Yuan has developed.

Dajisha park will finish other construction to improve the overall ecological quality in the next two years, such as infrastructure construction and landscape construction.

Luo Xiwen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and expert in agricultural mechanization engineering, said that Longping park allows people to feel the charm of both traditional and modern agriculture in such an international metropolis like Guangzhou.

"With the help of the park, farmers have seen increases in their annual income and have received more job opportunities. The park is also expected to boost the development of local tourism after construction is completed, bringing more benefits for local farmers," said Zhang Yaosan, a resident of the local community.
