BGI Group, one of the world's leading life sciences and genomics organizations based in Guangzhou's Huangpu district, has become the first in China to offer free irradiation services.

The service aims to enable medical supplies to be used in the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus as quickly as possible.

Zou Weiquan, general manager of BGI, said that the company has been devoting all efforts to make contributions to the fight against the novel coronavirus.

The company has made full use of its advantages in irradiation, which is safer and more effective than gas sterilization. "Normally it only takes 10 to 30 seconds to finish the process," added Zou.

Currently BGI has opened five production lines with a handling capacity of 110 boxes of supplies, equal to 4,400 pieces of protective clothing, per hour for each line. The overall handing capacity has reached about 460,000 pieces of protective clothing per day and these protective clothing can be put into use immediately after irradiation.

It is estimated that the company has saved an overall cost of more than 3 million yuan ($430,061.08) for relevant companies.
