Nanfang Daily: Huangpu district tops in Guangzhou for innovation ability

Guangzhou's Huangpu district continued to hold the first place among all districts in Guangzhou in terms of comprehensive innovation ability in 2018, according to the report on Guangzhou's urban innovation index.

The report, released on Dec 23, was jointly launched by the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development and the Guangzhou productivity promotion center.

Four important points of the innovation chain, namely innovation resources, enterprise innovation, innovation performance, and innovation environment, were set as the basis for the first level indicators, while 20 second level indicators were established under them to examine the city's innovation capacity in detail.

In recent years, Guangzhou has seen significant progress in elevating its innovation ability as the city's index score in the report has increased from 100 in 2010 to 247.25 in 2018, an average annual growth of 11.98 percent.

Huangpu district has attached great attention to innovation activities and human resources reserves. Currently, 380.89 out of 10,000 employees in Huangpu are involved in research and development (R&D), ranking first among all districts in Guangzhou.

In 2018, Huangpu's R&D expenditure amounted to 11.9 billion yuan ($1.7 billion), setting a new high. In addition, the district was also winners for both patent output and incubation system construction.
