Nanfang Daily: Huangpu has high hopes for 5G industry

Updated : 2019-10-30

Guangzhou’s Huangpu district and the Guangzhou Development District (GDD) recently issued a four-year action plan to boost the development of the 5G industry.

It is China’s first 5G development plan to be released by a district government.

According to the plan, Guangzhou Science City, Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, Guangzhou International Bio Island and Changzhou Island will be the four pilot areas for the industry.

A total of 12,000 base stations and more than 30 demonstration projects for 5G applications, including at least 15 “5G plus intelligent manufacturing” ones, will be built by 2022.

The 5G and ancillary businesses’ output value will exceed 30 billion yuan (S4.25 billion), adding nearly 70 billion yuan to Guangzhou’s GDP and helping develop it into a national demonstration city for 5G innovation.

Knowledge City, which links to the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, will enjoy complementarity with Shenzhen and Huizhou to attract more 5G core component manufacturers and high-end projects.

Science City will be home to 5G enterprises and a demonstration area for 5G applications and develop a headquarters economy for technological research and development.

Bio Island and Changzhou Island will grow into 5G-based automatic driving demonstration islands and smart city demonstration areas, speeding up the technology’s application in intelligent connected vehicles and smart cities.

As the strategic highland of the new generation of information technology and the main battlefield of the real economy in Guangdong and the Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area, Huangpu and the GDD signed a strategic cooperation agreement with three major telecommunication operators to build a 5G network demonstration zone in April.

The district has about 800 5G base stations and the number will go up to 5,000 by the end of this year.

As the industrial internet demonstration base in Guangdong, the district has housed a group of leading 5G enterprises with global presence and is home to 88 companies using 5G core components, network equipment and terminal devices.

The output value of the 5G industry in the district now exceeds 20 billion yuan.

In addition, a national driving contest for intelligent connected vehicles will be held in Guangpu and the GDD next month. It will bring in research and development projects and innovation resources in the field from China and areas abroad.
