Guangzhou Daily: Guangzhou to reinforce dyke for Changzhou Island

Guangzhou’s Huangpu district will reinforce its dyke on the Pearl River, according to an official document recently released by the local government.

The project involves reinforcement of the 13-kilometer-long dyke on the Pearl and Dongjiang rivers, and Changzhou and Hongsheng Sisha islands. Nine water locks along the rivers will be improved and heightened.

Due to frequent natural disasters like typhoons and rainstorms, the water level of the Pearl River stays high, which poses a serious threat to people and property and badly affects the operation of enterprises and docks on both sides.

In addition, the waterway network in Huangpu and the north bank of the Pearl River flows into the Pearl River over a total length of 6.27 km, including eight outlets on Changzhou Island.

Most of the river mouths in Huangpu are built with tide gates to prevent the tide from invading. When the water level is high, the gates are opened for drainage. However, with the increase in the waves’ tide level, some of the gates do not meet safety requirements.

According to the document, the project will be completed in January 2021.
