Yangcheng Evening News: Guangdong’s 5G applications to compete in national contest

Updated : 2019-10-17

Five 5G application projects stood out from 35 candidates from all over Guangdong province at a sub-contest of a national competition for the Zhanfang Trophy, a prize given to outstanding 5G applications, held in Guangdong’s capital city of Guangzhou on Oct 11.

The projects will compete in the finals of the national event on behalf of Guangdong.

A project involving a 5G comprehensive solution and its derivative application on standard high-speed trains is the only one among the five award-winning projects that aims to improve telecom service.

Developed by the China Railway Gecent Technology Co Ltd(CRGT), China Mobile and a research institute under China Railway Guangzhou Group, the solution adopts 5G communication equipment in high-speed railway trains to solve the problems of signal attenuation and user tidal effect and greatly reduce signal penetration loss.

The 5G network will cover the bullet trains and offer better signals for passengers with the help of a group of cutting-edge technologies, such as small cell base stations, network slicing, and edge computing.

The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway will take the lead in applying the solution and will become the world’s first intelligent high-speed railway with full 5G coverage along its entire route.

An intelligent patrol solution developed by China Telecom, the Public Security Bureau of Shenzhen’s Baoan district, Chinese telecom giant Huawei and AEE Aviation Technology also bagged a first prize at the contest.

It will realize "5G + Intelligent law enforcement terminal + real-time return of 4K HD video + AI intelligent identification" to provide police with a three-dimensional patrol solution.

The other three award-winning projects all focus on equipping intelligent manufacturing with 5G technology.

China Telecom, Huawei and home appliances maker Midea Group applied the 5G network to upgrade Midea’s traditional industrial park to an intelligent one through the wireless internet of things between equipment, materials and products.

An intelligent industrial park and a 5G-based intelligent steel factory were also first prize winners and will enter the finals for the national competition.

5G applications that have an impact on industry and people’s life are emerging in an endless stream and with the popularity of 5G networks more applications that affect production and life will come out, according to Hu Zhigang, chief engineer of the city’s bureau of industry and information technology.
