Among the key projects breaking ground on September 27, two innovation platforms — an innovation-driven center and a hub of international leading talents -- will further enhance the innovation capability of Knowledge City.

Leading sci-tech firms and players from the upstream and downstream sectors, as well as chuangke, or makers, will create a benign environment for industrial development.

Another project, an intellectual property service cluster, which is located in the southern part of Knowledge City, also started construction that same day.

Upon its completion, the cluster will attract global high-quality IP service providers and resources to the province. It will help Guangdong build a modern industrial system and accelerate transformation and upgrading of IP services.

Knowledge City is home to high-end innovation resources in the pharmaceutical industry.

In addition to the GE Biotechnology Park and Beigene’s bio-pharmacy project, more than 30 leading enterprises such as InnoCare, Thermo Fisher and Luye Pharma invested more than 20 billion yuan in the area.

A number of high-profile companies, including Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, and Baxter have launched projects there.

As a major biopharmaceutical industrial cluster of Guangzhou, Huangpu district, the Guangzhou High-tech Industrial Development Zone and Guangzhou Development District has been home to the country’s leading research institutes, enterprises and professionals in the sector.

Knowledge City, Guangzhou Science City and Guangzhou International Bio Island have grown into the core carriers of industrial development in Guangzhou.

Guangzhou CanSemi Technology Inc, a high-tech firm in Knowledge City, held an inauguration ceremony for its chip plant on Sept 20.

It is the only 12-inch chip production line in Guangdong province and marks a milestone in Guangzhou’s semiconductor industry.

The plant aims to build an ecosystem covering upstream and downstream enterprises and further boost the new generation of information technology, consumer electronics and artificial intelligence in Guangzhou and across the Pearl River Delta.

At present, more than 1,600 enterprises have registered in Knowledge City, bringing capital of 136.03 billion yuan ($19.03 billion).
