Guangzhou-based tech company Cansemi held an inauguration ceremony for its chip plant in the city's Huangpu district and Guangzhou Development District on Sept 20.

The only 12-inch chip production line in Guangdong province, the plant was built with an investment of 28.8 billion yuan($4.04 billion) and aims to build an ecosystem covering upstream and downstream enterprises.

In the past, it took at least aweek to finish the dockingfrom designto application; Cansemi can doit in only one day, the company's vice president Li Haiming said.

According to Cansemi, the project will be built in two phases. Phase I will focus on the production of 0.18um-90nm analog chips and discrete devices, which will be used in the Internet of Things and automotive electronics.

Phase II will use the world's top 65nm-40nm high voltage BCD analog chip technology to offer high-end automotive electronics and discrete devices for industries such as artificial intelligence and 5G.

According to Chen Wei, CEO of Cansemi, the automobile, electronic information and internet industries in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area are the company's target market.

Twelve-inch wafer chips are the mainstream products of multinational corporations, Li said, adding that the larger the wafer's size, the more chips it can produce.

Compared with an 8-inch chip production line, Cansemi's 12-inch chip line can be more efficient. "That's 2.25 times higher," Li noted.

At present, the Huangpu and Guangzhou Development District is home to more than 50 integrated circuit companies. Moreover, 32 enterprises in the industrial chain have settled in the district since Cansemi's plant began construction.
