A research center for the rare earth industry was launched in the Guangzhou Development Zone in South China's Guangdong province on July 9, according to Guangzhou-based newspaper Xinkuaibao.

It was initiated by the Baotou Rare Earth Research and Development Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and two local enterprises in Guangdong.

Rare earth is applied in both civil and military fields, ranging from mobile phones and cameras to missiles and radars. It is becoming increasingly important as a strategic non-renewable scarce resource.

The new research center will help offer a high-end sci-tech innovation platform for the development of the province’s rare earth industry and develop itself into a booster for two-way integration of the research and industrial chains.

China boasts abundant rare earth resources and has made breakthroughs in technological research and development, but the application still needs improvement, according to Li Chengyu, a researcher at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of CAS.

Li suggested Guangdong can integrate its new material industry with the application of rare earth and strengthen fundamental and application research with the help of the new center.

On the same day, a seminar on the application of rare earth was held in Guangzhou. Attendees exchanged ideas on the challenges faced by domestic players in the sector and took the pulse of the industry.
