The Guanzhou International Biological Forum, dubbed the "Davos Forum of Bio-Industry", unveiled its third session at Guangzhou International Biotech Island of Guangzhou's Huangpu district on June 10.

This year's theme is "Focusing on biological economy, Seeking innovation in the Bay Area".

Arrival of three innovation platforms and projects in the Guangzhou Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone(GHIDZ), Guangzhou Development District (GDD) and the city's Huangpu district was announced at the forum.

As the largest and most important cluster of bio-materials and medical devices in the country, Guangzhou ranks top in term of industrial scale and market size in China.

However, it still faces challenges such as lack of innovation. More than 80 percent of the high-end medical facilities are monopolized by foreign brands.

One of the innovation projects, the Innovation Center of High-performance Medical Device Industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, aims to become a platform covering fundamental research, industrialization, registration and application for approval, and to gain market admission through integrating resources from enterprises, talents and technologies from higher education institutions and research institutes in the Greater Bay Area.

Meanwhile, it will set up research and development centers in Hong Kong, Macao, North America and Europe to attract more innovation elements.

At the opening of the forum, the Chinese University of Hong Kong signed an agreement with Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory (GRMH-GDL) to establish the Advanced Research Institute of Regeneration Medicine.

The institute will focus on the basic research of stem cells and regenerative medicine, promote the output of major scientific research achievements, and build a world-class scientific research center.

The two sides will join hands to train doctoral students through the institute.

In addition, a biomedical device project of the GRMH-GDL will rely on the scientific strengths of the CAS and the GBA to build a coordinated mechanism and system covering basic research and international cooperation, clinical research and transfer and industrial development and promotion, as well as biomedical device R&D.

The GRMH-GDL plans to make breakthroughs in key technologies involving biomedical devices with investment of 1.5 billion ($217.39 million) within five years.
