The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and the Research Institute of Tsinghua, Pearl River Delta, inaugurated the Joint Research Center for Medical Artificial Intelligence in Guangzhou's Huangpu district on April 18.

The research and development of an AI psychological diagnosis and treatment system named "Jyut Listener" (Jyut means "Cantonese") is progressing.

"People with mental illness tend to be reluctant to talk to their doctors because of stress or other reasons. But they may say more about themselves to the AI system," said Rong Limin, president of the hospital. More importantly, the AI-based "tree hole" will automatically select useful information from the patient's words and give feedback.

Rong showed that the AI system would also be put into use by the community so that psychiatric patients can be diagnosed and treated at the earliest possible point.

According to the inauguration ceremony, as the first joint medical AI research center set up by medical institutions in Guangdong province, the two parties will focus on building a medical image-assisted diagnosis and treatment platform, an AI technology service platform, and a platform for training professional and technical personnel.

Rong hopes that the center will produce landmark results within one year, maintain scientific and technological dominance over medical AI in South China within three to five years, and evolve into an internationally influential regional demonstration base for the application of AI in the medical field.
