Bids have recently been sought for research on the integrated development strategy of Knowledge City and surrounding areas. The total area is 991 square kilometers, accounting for about 13 percent of the Guangzhou city area.

In November 2018, China and Singapore signed a framework agreement to upgrade Knowledge City to a national bilateral cooperation project. Guangzhou will launch the Strategic Planning for Integrative Development of Knowledge City and Its Surrounding Areas to promote high-quality development.

Knowledge City covers an area of 123 sq km. This research will survey Jiulong Town (including Knowledge City) in Huangpu district, Zhongluotan Town in Baiyun district, Huadong Town in Huadu district, Taiping Town in Conghua district and Zhongxin Town in Zengcheng district.

The project's total area is about 991 sq km, about 13 percent of Guangzhou's. In 2017, the total permanent population was about 663,000.

In the bidding announcement, it was proposed that Knowledge City should be the center to promote the development and functional improvement of  surrounding key cities and towns, such as Zhongxin, Taiping, Zhongluotan and Huadong.

It will focus on international innovation and development agglomeration areas such as Silicon Valley in the United States, Rhine River in Germany, Tsukuba Science Town in Japan, and refer to their organizational model and development path of industry, space and transportation.

In addition, in accordance with the current situation of comprehensive transportation between knowledge city and its surrounding areas, a multi-mode public transport system will be built aiming at interconnection between the five towns.
