Guangzhou Jiaotong University is coming to Huangpu district, and plans to start enrolling students in 2020.

Guangdong is taking effective measures to become a powerful province in marine economy. The water carrying equipment manufacturing industry and advanced shipping management capabilities are the cornerstones of its strategy and the key areas for maritime universities.

At the first session of the 13th CPPCC Guangzhou Municipal Committee, Cao Zhiwei, a member of the Standing Committee, proposed to integrate the resources of eight existing transportation colleges and technical secondary schools with Guangzhou Maritime University as their head, and to cooperate with high-level foreign schools on this basis.

According to Zou Cairong, dean of Guangzhou Maritime University, the construction of Guangzhou Jiaotong University will take approximately 6.2 billion yuan ($917 million), and a transportation technology innovation platform a further 3 billion yuan. With the cost of introducing talents and information construction, the total investment will reach 10 billion yuan.

Jiaotong University is a first-class comprehensive research university in China, and one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in the history of modern Chinese education. Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiaotong University have been referred to as "the MIT of the East" since the 1930s, while Southwest Jiaotong University is known as "the Cornell of the East".
